Barbarians3 Bellshill Academy- Rugby Champions of Lanarkshire
Bellshill Barbarians have had a great season and their recent outing to the Lanarkshire School’s Cup on Friday 24th April was a great opportunity for the pupils to showcase their talents. The Barbarians entered the tournament with an unbeaten record, so confidence amongst the boys was high. This was a key contributor to their success and was illustrated with a brilliant victory against Uddingston Grammar by a margin of 5 tries to 1. The boys’ determination and resilience in the following game against Whitburn highlighted the spirit of the team by putting three tries on the board to nil. Bellshill were in the final! The final was against Coatbridge High, who were formidable opponents with a great run of results. The game was very physical with big tackles by both teams followed by some great phases of play allowing for both teams to score. However it was Bellshill who came out on top with an emphatic 2-1 victory, winning the competition.

Following on from this success Bellshill Academy’s rugby team entered another tournament on Wednesday 28th April competing against schools from across North Lanarkshire. After victories over Coatbridge High (7 Tries-0), Dalziel High (5 Tries- 1) and Airdrie Academy (3 Tries-0) our team secured another 1st place. Winning the second competition in two weeks is an awesome achievement which is savoured by all who play, coach and support. The team look forward to preparing for next season aiming to maintain this high standard of rugby. A huge thanks to Mr Clark for coaching and inspiring our team.

Launch of FlamFire1e Out Project
We were delighted to welcome our Executive Director of Education, Andrew Sutherland, local elected members and community partners to the launch of a joint Bellshill Academy and Cardinal Newman HS Fire Safety project. The launch which took place on Friday 13th March in the Academy’s Jura suite, was co-ordinated by Yvonne Macbean (Partnership Officer) and Jim Paterson (Youth Worker, Bellshill Area Team). Yvonne and Jim were given funding by the Bellshill Community Safety Sub Group to work with young people in the area to decrease the amount of wilful fire raising and in particular wheelie bin fires. A group of 25 young people from both Bellshill Academy and Cardinal Newman High worked together to develop a fire prevention peer education pack and educational videos to go along with the pack.

Matt Costello, representing the Community Safety sub group, praised the students for the tremendous effort they had put in to such a worthwhile project.

ArtPhotoArt Project
A group of S4 pupils from have recently finished two murals which have been displayed in the school hallway. The paintings were inspired by the work of the artist James Cowie, who was a former Principal Teacher at Bellshill Academy. The pupils worked on and finished the murals in their own time after school and everyone was delighted with the final outcome. A small unveiling took place on Tuesday 24th of March where QIO of Expressive Arts, Irene Pandolfi was invited to attend together with Head Teacher Anne Munro, other members of staff and some S1 pupils. Many thanks to Mrs Claire Campbell in the Art department for supporting the pupils throughout this project and congratulations to the students for producing such a fantastic piece of work.
