Bellshill Academy Malawi Team visit Motherwell and Wishaw Rotary Club

Bellshill Academy Malawi Team members Ross McAlpine and Rebecca Lovell enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of Motherwell and Wishaw Rotary Club last Thursday evening. The pupils had been invited with Mr Sexton to speak about the Academy’s ongoing fundraising for a planned trip to Malawi in June. The focus of the school’s visit will be to raise awareness of the importance of educating girls and ensuring raising the status of women and girls is a development priority in Malawi. We also plan to work with a school for disabled children to improve access to education for some of the most disadvantaged children in Malawi. Over the course of the evening we learned that the Rotary Club also support an ongoing water pump programme in Malawi, and if at all possible we’ll visit one of their projects when we visit in June.

Launch of National Voters registration Day

National Voters Registration day was on Wednesday 5th February and Bellshill Academy S5 pupils were invited by the Scottish Youth Parliament to help launch their new tool kit for engaging young people in the voting registration process. All of the S5 pupils engaged in the debates and activities that were facilitated by the SYP staff and Jordan Linden MSYP for Bellshill and Uddingston. Many young people who had not already registered to vote completed registration forms and were enthusiastic about the event. This was a great opportunity for the academy to be involved in such a high profile event. (Photo attached showing pupils and SYP staff).
